When I use the word hay, it is 10 acres of alfalfa, and 20 acres of a pasture grass/alfalfa mix that I will need to bale as it gets ahead of my cattle grazing it.

I found a JD 800 Swather with a 12' head. I have only seen one picture of it online. In talking to them, it is of course in good shape and was used last fall for 3rd crop hay. If it really is in good shape, does anyone know about this machine model? Is is pratical for an operation my size? What do I need to know about it that might bite my rear end? I can still get a manual, and will be going to visit a JD dealer today to see if parts are still avaliable.

Seriously now. Is it a grain (draper) head, or a hay head with an auger? The 'tractor' part is pretty good as swathers/windrowers of that era go.

The MOPAR slant-6 has adequate power and is pretty dependable, although they would occasionally break a crankshaft from the big drive pulley hanging overboard off the end of the crank. They were a bit THIRSTY, though. The carb's didn't have an adjustable mainjet. I swapped carbs on mine to one WITH an adjustable jet, and set the timing ahead a bit, and got the 'mileage' up noticeably. I've cut THOUSANDS of acres with an 800 with the 22-1/2' grain head without much trouble from the machine.

Almost the same machine the 830 is just a little newer model.It has worked great for me. Just keep the cutter bar in good shape. Mine will cut about 4 to 5 acres grass hay an hour and is very easy on gas. The gas tank holds about 20 Gals and I can cut all 30 acres and have some left.The Slant 225CID engine is very dependable and tought. If you can get it cheap you could put a bit of money back in it and cutting 30 acres it would last a long time. Make certain the lower slides for the draper canvas tighteners are not stuck,seized or rusted.

Otherwise the canvases won't tighten or track properly. The final drive chains have to be kept at their ideal tension. You do not want to wrap the chain around the lower sprocket. You can bung the conditioner when making a square corner if you are not careful. Get the operator's manual. The 800/830 has as many hidden adjustments and grease fittings as a 1950's vintage combine.

Maybe my lawn mower would be faster. LOL Needless to say, it is a 12 FOOT head. Local JD dealer shows most all parts other than sheet metal is avaliable, and I found a place in KS that makes/sells replacement canvas. Thanks to all.

The parts are avail from John Deere but they are a little pricy. The good is it is easy to fix being all chains and sprockets, however you will need to keep it well lubed. As said before the canvas belts can be trouble. I sold mine and bought a Hesston 6600 with cab, Air cond., and 14' head and havent missed it a bit.

Very important to keep the leaf spring that counters the belt tension in proper adjustment. Not sure if it was an 800 or not, but it was basically the same thing. A neighbor had one, and a relative had another. We used either one to cut our oats, and they both ran pretty well. On the relative's, one of the clutches went out while I was doing the headlands. After fixing the clutch (borrowed from the other neighbor's machine after it became a parts machine) I snapped the drive chain on that side.

It was a major pain to put it back together, but after several hours of fishing for it with a coat hanger down the frame, I got it and managed to get it together. For 30 acres, I'd say it would easily be up to the task.

We currently have a 14' Hesston 1014+2 Hydro-Swing haybine, and we now use that to swath oats. Knocks more off because it's got an auger instead of the draper head, but Like I said one neigbor's became a parts donor for an 830 with an auger header, and the other one was sold at his estate auction this fall after he was killed in an accident. Been using our Hesston for the last 2 years for oats. A 12' or 14' cut makes it much easier to cut 20-30 acres of hay with a mower conditioner. We used to do it with a 9' machine and I'm able to cut out close to 1/2 the time.

Overall, I thought they were pretty decent machines.
